Learn the skills necessary to enjoy some of the world's
finest fly fishing for trout. I offer a range of programmes
to suit different skill levels. "My Aim is to help you
become a skilled and successful angler."

- FIRST
STEPS -INTRODUCTORY FLY FISHING
- A Day School for new anglers covering the basic theory and
practical skills of fly fishing for trout. (Suitable for new
or inexperienced anglers)
- FLY
FISHING RIVER SKILLS
- A River Based Day School to learn on-the- water fly fishing
skills. (Suitable for anglers with sound basic casting and fishing
skills)

TROUT TACTICS
- A Three Day In-House Course covering advanced river, casting
and fishing skills. (Suitable for anglers with sound basic casting
and fishing skills)

DATES AND BOOKING FORM

Two schools: Each limited to six participants.
Cost: NZD$110.00 pp. Children: $50.00 if accompanied by
participating adult.
Departure: Classes 9.00am to 5.30pm
All equipment is provided, but students are encouraged to bring
their own equipment if they have it.
Venue: Nelson-Marlborough
Fish & Game Council Rooms, Champion Rd, Richmond.
COURSE
AIM: TO INTRODUCE NEW ANGLERS TO THE BASIC PRINCIPLES AND
PRACTISES OF FLY FISHING FOR TROUT.
OUTCOMES: At the conclusion of the day, students will:
- Have
a basic understanding of the habits of brown trout, the insects
they feed on and the habitats of both.
- Have
a basic understanding of how fly fishing attempts to exploit
this knowledge to facilitate the catching of trout.
- Know
what is appropriate equipment, as well as where and when to
use it.
- Know
how to use this equipment to help achieve this outcome.
- Understand
the principles of safe trout handling and the conservation ethic
of Catch and Release.
SUBJECT
AREAS: Philosophy of Fly Fishing, List of Equipment, Knots
and Rigs, Understanding your Quarry, Basic Entomology, Categories
of Fly Fishing, Choosing the Appropriate Fly, Basic Streamcraft,
Fly Casting, Principles of Catch and Release.

Two

Departure: Classes depart Nelson 8.00am to 6.30pm
Students are encouraged to bring their own equipment but assistance
with tackle is available if needed.
Venue: Any of Motueka, Pelorus, Wairau or Buller Rivers.
COURSE AIM: TO REFINE ANGLERS ON-RIVER FLY FISHING
SKILLS FOR BROWN TROUT.
OUTCOMES: At the conclusion of the day, students will:
- Have
refined their skills in setting up suitable tackle and effective
fly selection.
- Have
improved their ability to 'read water' and choose appropriate
locations to fish for brown trout.
- Have
improved their trout spotting ability, fly casting and fly presentation
skills.
- Have
(trout willing), improved their trout playing and trout handling
abilities.
- Have
a better appreciation of how to improve their skills on future
fishing trips.

AREAS:
On-Stream Entomology, Effective Rigs, Choosing the Appropriate
Fly, Practical Streamcraft, Trout Spotting, Understanding your
Quarry, Practical Fly Presentation, Practical Hookup and Landing
Skills, Practical Catch and Release.

One school: Limited to four participants.
Cost: NZD$650.00pp. (Includes accommodation and daily
transport, but does not include meals).
Venue: Course based in Murchison. Students to assemble
night prior to course start. Some transfers from Nelson available.
Students bring their own equipment.
COURSE AIM: TO IMPROVE, THROUGH PERSONALISED TUITION AND PRACTICAL
FISHING, ANGLERS' SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES IN RIVER FISHING FOR BROWN
TROUT.
OUTCOMES: At the conclusion of three days practical fishing
experience, students will:
- Be
able to set up suitable tackle and make effective fly selections
for a variety of fishing situations.
- Have
developed a good ability to 'read water' and choose appropriate
locations to fish for brown trout.
- Have
improved their trout spotting ability, fly casting and fly presentation
skills.
- Have
(trout willing), improved their trout playing and trout handling
abilities.
- Have
a better appreciation of how to improve their skills on future
fishing trips.
